This

Sunday's Gospel involves five great images. The first is the enthusiasm of St Peter, jumping almost naked into the water; an image of joy and energy in the service of the Lord. The second is the great draft of fishes; symbol of all those who would be drawn into the faith by the witness of the Apostles. The third is the meal at which they recognise Jesus; symbol of the great Eucharistic meal of our faith, which sustains us and unites us. The fourth is the call of Peter ('Do you love me?); a reminder that love is a constant decision, not a once-off declaration, and that love will be tested. And the last is the prophecy of Peter's martyrdom ('somebody else will put a belt around you and lead you where you would rather not go'); a reminder of the cost of witness. Faith and service of the Lord are rewarding and joyful but they are also challenging and 'cost not less than everything'.

It is, of course, also a day on which to pray especially for vocations to the priesthood and religious life - which will really come when we each acknowledge the unique vocation that God has set before us. The Tetramorph AND FINALLY... Sunday's first reading mentions the 'Four Animals'; the Man, the Lion, the Ox and the Eagle, most usually associated with the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - in that order. Originally seen as one creature with four heads, it is now most often shown as four separate creatures. The term used is 'Tetramorph' - who knows, you might win 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' with this information!
